Activities

The ANS Halloween party is tentatively planned for Saturday, October 27th, 2007.

ANS National Conferences

Graduates, undergraduates, faculty and alumni of the A&M Nuclear Engineering Department attend ANS National & Student conferences each year. The most recent was the Student Conference at Oregon State University. Students presented posters and technical papers (congratulations to our Outstanding Presentation honorees: Paul Mews in Material Science and Technology and Jennifer and Karen Koop in the Outreach, Education, and Public Awareness), had job interviews, met other students from across the country, and had fun winning door prizes.

Are you interested in attending an ANS Conference? Make sure you're on the department undergraduate or graduate listserve so that you'll receive updates.

Annual Nuclear Engineering Chili Cook-Off

The Nuclear Department’s Chili Cook-Off is an annual event that is held each fall at the home of Dr. Peddicord, Professor of Nuclear Engineering and one of Texas A&M's Vice Chancellors. Texas A&M is a school rich in tradition and this event is a twenty years and running tradition in our department.

Nuclear engineering students cook up their favorite chili and dessert recipes and have them judged by the professors. Then, the person or team with the top chili and dessert each receive an award for their hard work and cooking ability. Everyone is invited to come and taste the food. This event is successful in sparking friendly competition among students while giving participants and taste-testers alike the opportunity to further their involvement in the department.

This year's cook-off is tentatively planned for Saturday, November 18th, 2007.

Engineering day at the mall

Engineering Day (E-Day) at the Mall is a biannual event wherein the Texas A&M College of Engineering and the College of Science put on a science fair for children of all ages. Each department promotes learning and exposure to the sciences through interactive displays and activities.

ANS and HPS officers representing the Nuclear Engineering Department introduce attendees to radiation using the infamous fiestaware cookie display, thorium-based lantern mantles, and other props while distributing ANS materials such as the fuel pellet card and coloring books.

Sailing

The Texas A&M Nuclear Engineering Department teams up with the Texas A&M Sailing Club to host the sailing events. The Sailing Club provides boats and instructs the newbies while the ANS Grilling Committee keeps the party going all afternoon.

Our most recent even was April 29, 2007. We enjoyed free food and fun on the lake. Check out the Sailing Club's website which has the info about the boats and equipment, cool pics, and maps. (Go to maps, scroll down to Lake Bryan, and click on the map to get a better resolution.) The Boatyard is on the main beach where the party will be. There are also sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, hiking and biking trails, swimming, and even mushroom picking!
